Target Acquired....Birthday

Target Acquired...Birthday DUE: 29 Nov 2011

Purpose: To gain experience using projectile motion equations.

Your Mission: Come up with a firing solution (angle and initial velocity) that will travel a particular distance.

Grading: This assignment will be graded as a quiz. Give it a page in your notebook with an appropriate heading. Show all variables and all your work.

Your distance will be the month and day of your birthday as a 4 digit number. For example, if your birthday was August 16 your distance would be 0816. Eight hundred and sixteen meters. Or if your birthday was November 3 your number would be 1103. Eleven hundred and three meters.

You will need to come up with 2 numbers for me. Theta (Θ) will be the angle above the horizontal (just like usual) that you will fire it at. Initial Velocity (Vi) will be the velocity at which the projectile is fired.

This exercise is very similar to the Cannon Warfare activity we did in class, however I haven’t given you Δt in this instance.

There are many (infinite) combinations of Vi, Θ, and Δt that will hit your target. So to pick one of those combinations you’re going to have to set one of the variables and then find the other two.

I would recommend setting your Δt so that the problem greatly resembles your notes from Cannon Warfare.

(Hint: Maybe a few seconds for each 100 meters or something like that?)

Once you’ve picked a Δt then use it and Δx to find your Θ and Vi. Check your notes from Cannon Warfare for the exact maneuvers.

And because I'm a nice guy I'll give you 2m error on your accuracy.

Email me if you have any questions. I'll try and check it regularly but let's remember, we're ALL on vacation.
